CoJ pulls plug on New Year's Eve celebrations

 

JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg has cancelled its annual New Year's Eve celebrations.

The event was postponed for the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mayor Mpho Phalatse says recent heavy rains and flooding are the reason for this year's cancellation.

The city is channelling all available resources and funding into repairing infrastructure.

The event normally helps to create temporary jobs and allows local artists and creatives to showcase their talent.

The city says it's prioritising the well-being of residents.
