JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg is among a number of municipalities that want to dump Eskom.
The country's largest metro plans to move away from the grid, at least partially, by approaching independent power producers.
The country is currently being subjected to stage 5 blackouts, and this makes City Power’s network vulnerable to faults and unplanned outages.
Johannesburg MMC for Infrastructure Services and Environment Michael Sun said, "it’s quite a complicated process, we roped in the assistance of National Treasury to make sure we tick all the boxes….to get 500 megawatts will be a process."
"We will look at the first 100 megawatts to come from available supply. Then we will be able to shield our residents away from the impact."
