JOHANNESBURG - Healthcare workers are buckling under the pressure of the cholera outbreak in Hammanskraal.

Nursing union Denosa says they are being inundated with cases.

It says despite promises by ministers to bring in more help, very little has arrived.

“There is an influx since the outbreak was declared. I was just in casualty, they were promised to be given enough assistance, however, there were just two nurses brought in to assist," said Denosa Tshwane regional secretary Mogomotsi Seleke.

"But when ministers communicate this, they will say they have brought in a large number. In essence, hospitals are functioning with normal casualty staff.

"That’s a problem. We require more nurses so that the ones that they are here already don’t feel the burnout that they’ve been already feeling for some time.”
