JOHANNESBURG - Police Minister Bheki Cele says the DNA backlog has been reduced to 71,000 cases.
This is down from the 241,000 case backlog recorded during the first quarter of 2021/2022.
Earlier, officials gave an update on the National Strategic Plan on gender-based violence ahead of government's GBV summit.
"Within the first quarter of the year 2021/2022 April, we had a huge backlog 241,000 backlog of the DNA.
"Most of the DNA would be the women abused and raped and the murders which we are not going to resolve those cases if those things are not done," Cele said.
"There were issues with the none professional management of contracts. Sixteen contracts were allowed to collapse, all those contracts are in place, all those contracts are monitored on a month-to-month basis."
