Calm restored following xenophobic attacks near Hermanus

CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police say they’re still investigating the murder of a woman whose mutilated remains were discovered in a plastic bag in Zwelihle, near Hermanus.

A foreign national was taken in for questioning after he’d been spotted on CCTV footage walking near where the body was later found.

Community members pre-emptively assumed the non-South African committed the crime, sparking xenophobic attacks in the area.

As the attacks continued, 600 people had to be evacuated to places of safety. 

Officials say tensions between locals and foreign nationals are nothing new.

No arrests have been made in the murder case or for the attacks
