CAPE TOWN - The Finance Minister is proposing that government spends just under R2.6 trillion, in the coming financial year.
Learning and culture gets the biggest slice of the budget. And basic education takes the largest bite – about R332 billion. Most of this money – almost 80 percent of it goes towards paying teachers and administrators their salaries.
Given that the initial budget was not tabled, this reworked budget has fewer safety measures in place.

Social Development has been allocated R422 billion with 81 percent of it going to Social Grants. Pensioners get R130 more.
Those on the child support grant get R30 more and those who receive a foster care grant receive R70 more.
The social relief of distress grant has been extended by another year. It will cost the country R35.6 billion.
However, overall, less money has been allocated in this budget for grants than was in the budget that was never presented.
