BERGVILLE - The Bergville man arrested for a stabbing spree that left five of his relatives dead has been remanded in custody to allow for his legal aid application.
Mlamuli Mondli Khoza (28) made a brief appearance in the Bergville magistrate's court, facing five counts of murder and two of attempted murder.
Residents and political parties held a demonstration outside the courthouse, denouncing crime and calling for the accused not to be granted bail.
Khoza told the court he wants to apply for bail and does not have any criminal record.
The state will oppose his bail application.
Local police have said the accused has had several cases opened against him for terrorising relatives and community members.
Khoza will appear in court again on Wednesday.
