Battle lines drawn in Niger

NIAMEY - ECOWAS has given new military leaders in Niger one week to cede power.

The bloc is demanding the country's president be reinstated by Sunday.

Mohamed Bazoum has been held by the military since last Wednesday.

But, the coup leaders are warning of retaliation against any military interventions.

The latest coup in one of the world's largest uranium producers has raised global alarm.

The US, UN, EU and African Union are calling on soldiers to return to their barracks.

France, with over a thousand soldiers in Niger, has suspended development aid and budgetary support.
