12 officials arrested for roadworthy certificate fraud

LIMPOPO - At least twelve vehicle examiners and administrative clerks are set to appear before the Polokwane Commercial Crimes Court in Limpopo on Friday.

They're facing multiple counts of fraud related to issuing motor vehicle roadworthy certificates.

The suspects were arrested in different locations, following a lengthy investigation by the Road Traffic Management Corporation’s national traffic anti-corruption unit and the Hawks.

Road Traffic Management Corporation Simon Zwane said, "They were working for a privately owned vehicle testing in Polokwane."

"They would use the ID of somebody who was not even there to manipulate the system for a vehicle that has not been brought to the station."

"So for scores of vehicles of which they generated roadworthy certificates, they never got tested."
