Discussion | Unemployment rate rises again

JOHANNESBURG - The official unemployment rate has increased yet again, in the first quarter of 2024.

The number of people without jobs increased by 330,000 to 8.2m, which equates to an unemployment rate of 32.9%.

This is up from 32.1% in the fourth quarter of 2023.

The sectors that shed the most jobs are community and social services, construction, finance and utilities.

Slightly encouraging is the number of employed persons. That only increased by 22,000 in the same period to 16.7m.
