The tragic blaze prompted a commission of inquiry.

According to the police, the fire began after Mdlalose assaulted a man named KB in a ground-floor room, seeking payment for drugs sold on his behalf.

After a violent confrontation, Mdlalose believed KB had died and left to buy petrol.
He later returned, doused KB’s body with fuel, and set it alight, sparking a fire that quickly engulfed the building.
As flames spread, residents were trapped, some jumping from windows in an attempt to escape.
The case has been adjourned to 21 February for confirmation of the accused’s legal representation and pre-trial proceedings.
