UPDATE: City of Joburg cancels prepaid surcharge briefing

JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg has just postponed its briefing where it was meant to give clarity on the R200 prepaid electricity surcharge.

The new tariff regime has sparked outrage across the metro.

Residents were left shocked when buying electricity gave them far fewer units than usual.

It was due to the monthly surcharge and a tariff increase of around 12 percent.

The new regime was unilaterally implemented on the 1st of July.

Residents, civil society and businesses are angry at the lack of consultation in the process.

Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda defended the new fees, saying it's embedded in the budget.

But Finance MMC Dada Morero announced a review of the regime.
