JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Economic Development MEC Lebogang Maile says thousands of spaza shops in the province are non-compliant.
This follows the spaza shop registration deadline on Friday.
In Gauteng alone, 17,617 applications were received, with Ekurhuleni recording the highest number while 7,107 of those applications were from foreign nationals.
"The approval process is extensive and is preceded by the inspection of business premises as well as verification of documentation," Maile said.
