Shootout in Jeppestown leaves four dead

JOHANNESBURG - Four people have been shot dead in suspected taxi violence in Jeppestown in Johannesburg.

Police have not confirmed arrests or the identity of the suspects.

It's also unclear if the victims were targeted or were innocent bystanders.

Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said one of the people killed was a taxi driver. 

She said three people were wounded and taken to hospital.

"Out of the three one was a university student, a taxi driver and a passenger," she said

Nevhuhulwi said the matter is being investigated. 

Meanwhile locals in the area who are students say they fear for their lives following the incident. 

One student said this is not the first time she has heard gunshots in the area and questions if she can continue to live in there
