Road safety | Speeding, bribes and drunk driving lead to 7,500 arrests

JOHANNESBURG - The Road Traffic Management Corporation says most offenders over the holiday season were arrested for drunk driving, speeding, driving without a valid licence, and even even attempted bribery.

"Top of the offences were drunken driving, excessive speed then there would have been people driving while they do not have drivers licences," said RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane.

As South Africa's roads continue to see increased traffic in the next few days, the RTCM has urged motorists to remain vigilant, slow down and maintain a safe following distance, particularly during bad weather.

It also reminded motorists that irresponsible driving behavior is a road hazard too.
