JOHANNESBURG - KwaMakhutha residents are demanding swift police action against illegal firearms.
This follows a mass shooting that left 11 dead, including a pregnant woman.
Three people remain in hospital after gunmen stormed a home in the township.
Investigators said some of the victims were known to Crime Intelligence.
Police haven’t confirmed a motive they aren’t ruling out a gang feud.
Ward councillor Thabisile Zungu said they have never seen anything like this before.
"This is the first of its kind. We haven't seen something like this. Yes, sometimes there are people who are gunned down, but not like this, like the way it happened today. Yeah, so and I'm sure the community is traumatised, as I am also traumatised, seeing so many bodies for families that are just around. It's so traumatising," she said.
KZN Premier Thami Ntuli has urged residents to come forward with any information that may assist the investigation.
“I’ve engaged some community members as to what is really happening, and they have cited the problem of drugs, and the police will investigate following the information they also get from society as to what really is actually happening.
"I have seen that the cruelty is showing a high level of anger, which is quite problematic in the province of KwaZulu-Natal for people if they are suspicious of drug involvement and also illegal firearms because people are also complaining in this community that there is a problem of illegal firearms; at the same time, there is a problem of drugs in the area.”
