Police in Durban kill four extortion suspects in shootout

DUBRAN - Four suspected extortionists were shot and killed in a shootout with police in KwaZulu-Natal. 

The incident happened on Thursday at Dumisani Makhaye Drive in Durban. 

KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani said the suspects were driving from KwaMashu when they were intercepted by police after following intelligence.

When police tried to stop the vehicle suspects opened fire, she said.

According to Funani one of the suspects was linked to extortion, murder and robbery happening around Durban and KwaMashu.

"In the vehicle, we found two unlicensed firearms. One fire arm was found with the suspect who tired to flee the scene," she said 

Investigations into the matter have now been launched.
