More pupils treated for foodborne illnesses

BLOEMFONTEIN - A total of 46 pupils have been rushed to a Bloemfontein hospital with suspected food poisoning.

This after Free State Education Department called on law enforcement agencies to clamp down on spaza shops selling contaminated food.

The 33 Ihobe Primary school pupils and 13 pupils from Itemoheng Primary School have been taken to hospital.

On Wednesday, 48 Daluvuyo Primary School pupils in Welkom were hospitalised. 

They allegedly consumed food items bought from a local spaza shop and vendors near the school.

Three remain under medical observation while 45 have since been discharged.

In another incident, an 11-year-old died in Alexandra after consuming suspected poisonous snacks.
