CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police have described the alleged rape of a woman while in custody as a shame and embarrassment for the service.
A 41-year-old detective stationed at the Malmesbury police station made his first appearance in the local magistrate's court on Monday.
He faces charges including rape, kidnapping and driving under the influence of alcohol in connection with the incident that played out on Christmas Day.
The defence objected to having footage of the accused captured in court, while it’s been highlighted that more witnesses may come forward.
A formal bail application will be heard in the Porterville magistrate’s court on 8 January.
The accused will remain behind bars until then.
