JOHANNESBURG - Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa is proposing radical changes to initiation practices.
He says parts of the rite of passage into manhood may be banned.
It comes as 27 boys have been confirmed dead in the Eastern Cape summer initiation season.
Authorities say dehydration has emerged as the leading cause of death.
Initiates are expected to survive for days without water.
Hlabisa hopes he will get cooperation from the Eastern Cape's Royal Houses for his interventions.
