Illegal mining | Food and water supplied for Stilfontein zama zamas

JOHANNEBURG - Food, water and batteries are just some of the items sent to illegal miners who remain underground at an abandoned mine shaft in Stilfontein.

The Mining Affected Communities United in Action organisation has been granted an interim court order allowing it to send food and other emergency relief underground.

21 more illegal miners surfaced through the Margaret and number 10 shafts on Monday.

One of them had to be taken to a local hospital due to dehydration.

More police have been deployed at various shafts in Stilfontein to look out for any other zama zamas who resurface.

The North West Community Safety Department says it intends to challenge the interim court order allowing food and water to be sent to the miners underground.

More illegal miners are expected to surface in the coming days.
