CAPE TOWN - Cape Town authorities are ramping up their efforts to rid communities of illegal firearms.
Officials say there has been a sharp rise in the circulation of illicit guns across the city, with Vrygrond emerging as one of the epicentres of ongoing gang violence.
Over the past financial year, more than a thousand firearms have been confiscated in the Western Cape.

Some of them traced back to sources outside the country.
The Western Cape provincial government has pledged to adapt and strengthen its Safety Plan to better protect communities.
