Home Affairs minister seeking to evict CT refugees

CAPE TOWN - Hundreds of foreign nationals who've been living in two giant marquees since the Covid-19 hard lockdown in 2020 are facing eviction.

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber, together with Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, will launch joint eviction applications for those occupying the Wingfield and Paint City sites.

The minister says this is to restore the rule of law and that countrywide operations will follow.

But the refugees and asylum seekers say they have not been informed of the move adding that they want to be taken to a third country as they do not feel safe in South Africa.

Something they have been saying for almost five years.
