Food safety | Gauteng schools told to temporarily close tuck shops

JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Education is advising schools to temporarily stop tuck shop services.

Parents are being urged to send lunch from home instead of money.

It comes as children fall victim to food poisoning on an almost daily basis.

Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said they've communicated with all schools in the province to stop all food vendor activities.

The department is calling on schools to enforce these guidelines rigorously. 

"Instances of non-compliance must be reported immediately to both the District Office and the Department of Health," it said in a statement.
