Festive season safety | Authorities urge caution amid new moon spring tide

DURBAN - Durban officials are preparing for a massive influx of beachgoers this New Year's Eve.

However, the National Sea Rescue Institute is urging people to be careful due to the approaching new moon spring tide, which peaks on Tuesday.

This phenomenon affects the tidal patterns along the coastline, resulting in much lower and higher tides.

Lifeguards and law enforcement agencies are out in full force monitoring the coastline to ensure revellers enjoy the festivities in the city safely.

Beachgoers are reminded to be responsible and avoid drinking alcohol excessively, as this can impair judgment and increase the risk of accidents.
