CAPE TOWN - Traffic volumes are increasing on major routes as thousands travel to various destinations for the holidays.
Transport authorities are ramping up efforts to curb escalating numbers of road deaths.
Already, over 500 have died on the roads since the beginning of December.
This is according to a preliminary road safety report released by Transport Minister Barbara Creecy.
Authorities are also sounding the alarm over the high number of pedestrian deaths.
Half of all deaths are people on foot.
