JOHANNESBURG - Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has welcomed the decision to extend Koeberg's operating licence.
He says it shows nuclear energy is an important contributor to meeting the country's energy security objectives.
Eskom has been granted a licence extension to run Unit 1 until July 2044.
The 40-year operating licence of the facility outside Cape Town was due to expire this month.
In 2021, the power utility applied for a 20-year extension as part of efforts to end crippling power shortages.
The plant provides over 900 megawatts to the grid.
