DURBAN - Many schools in KwaZulu-Natal have started the year balancing teaching and racing to repair infrastructure.
The provincial Department of Education says an emergency has been declared to fix 52 schools damaged by heavy rains in the past three months.

These repairs are taking place while schools are bracing for the possibility of more severe weather.
