JOHANNESBURG - With expelled US Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool's return to South Africa, what does this mean for relations between Pretoria and Washington?

Rasool was declared persona non grata earlier this month after he criticised US President Donald Trump.

Trade union federation, Cosatu, has been vocal in its support of Rasool.

Cosatu president, Zingiswa Losi commented on the expulsion saying, "One would not want to say that he failed in as far as raising the issues, if he was not the ambassador, one would say."

"The issues that he raised, for us as South Africans, are genuine issues but also holding his position that he held at that particular time, in hindsight, he would have realised it was not appropriate for him to utter such utterances."

"But also we must say the way that the government of the United States of America has decided to move with it was unfortunately regrettable for us because we would have expected that some engagements would have taken place," she said.
