CoGTA minister calls for tougher spaza shops checks

JOHANNEBSURG - Co-operative Governance Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa says some spaza shops are still non-compliant. 

Government went on a drive to ensure the registration of informal businesses. 

It followed numerous cases were people became ill after consuming food from spaza shops.

In the latest incident, an eight-year-old Soweto boy has been hospitalised. 

He felt sick after eating chips bought at a local spaza shop. 

Hlabisa says they will ramp up efforts to ensure laws are adhered to.
