Call to regulate private healthcare sector

JOHANNESBURG - Access to private health care remains a problem in South Africa.

Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi says people often blame government for high private health care costs.

But, he says there's no law that regulates private health.

The minister has been giving an update on implementing recommendations of the Health Market Inquiry.

Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau says medical schemes are abusing pricing of prescribed minimum benefits.

''The cost of private healthcare should remain in check to ensure majority of South Africans have access to affordable healthcare," he said.

Tau says a formal and transparent tariff determination is needed to address high costs in private health care.

''Given the above challenges, there must be a structured regulatory framework to guide tariff determination in the healthcare sector."
