Amber-Lee Hughes sentencing continues in child murder case

JOHANNESBURG - Details about convicted murderer Amber-Lee Hughes's family life have come up on the first day of sentencing proceedings.

Hughes faces life in prison for drowning four-year-old Nada-Jane Challita, her partner's daughter.

The 26-year-old was also found guilty of rape.

In mitigation of sentence, Hughes's legal team has painted a picture of a troubled childhood.

This included her mother’s suicide attempts, drug use and physical abuse targeted at her husband and children.

The questioning arrow was also aimed at Elie Challita, the father of the drowned four-year-old Nada-Jane, and his tumultuous relationship with the accused.
