54-year-old man arrested for fatal WSU shooting

 MTHATHA - A 54-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting incident at Walter Sisulu University (WSU). 

The South African Police Service confirmed the arrest, saying the man has been charged with murder and attempted murder.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana says While this arrest is a critical step, the investigation remains active.

" No further details will be released at this time to preserve the integrity of the case. Updates will be provided as appropriate," Gantana said.

The man is expected to appear in court on 22 April 2025.

The student killed at the university was registered at the institution.

Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane says Sisonke Mbolekwa was indeed a student.

It comes after the university initially said he was not registered with them.

The manager of a student residence reportedly shot him as students complained about living conditions.
