DURBAN - A man wanted in connection with the murder of two KwaZulu-Natal Crime Intelligence officers has been killed in a shootout with police.
The suspect was cornered and shot in Inanda on Friday morning. A member of the Special Task Force was wounded during the operation.
Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo and Captain Louis Nel were ambushed in Mount Edgecombe, north of Durban, on 30 April 2026. The two officers, who were attached to Crime Intelligence, were travelling in an unmarked state vehicle when they came under a hail of gunfire.
Nel was declared dead at the scene, while Khuzwayo succumbed to his gunshot wounds in hospital on 25 May.
At Nel’s funeral in May, KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi vowed that the officers’ killers would be brought to justice, telling their families that the suspects would be found “dead or alive”.
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said a multidisciplinary team was investigating the case. Five other suspects were arrested during the operation.
“Only this suspect gave police the runaround, shooting from inside the house. There were negotiations as he had a girlfriend inside the house. He released the girl, but he still didn’t want to budge. Unfortunately, he shot and injured one of the STF members.”
Netshiunda said the police officer was shot in the hand.
