Walking with a purpose: 30 years of democracy and Mandela's legacy

JOHANNESBURG - The streets of Pretoria buzzed with excitement this past Sunday, 28 July 2024, as over 20,000 people gathered for the 702 Walk the Talk, in honour of Mandela Month and 30 years of South African Democracy.

702 invited South Africans to walk through the streets of history, and this year’s event featured a scenic route starting at Freedom Park and finishing at the Union Buildings.

Other notable sites included Lilian Ngoyi Square which in the past was known for various protests by South African activists who demanded equality. Walkers also passed the Heart Hospital where Nelson Mandela stayed during his final days.

Participants had the option of a 6.7km route, symbolising Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of service, or an 8km route for those who wanted more of a challenge.

The walk attracted a diverse crowd, from children to seniors, each walking for a different cause, and bringing their own unique stories.

Zahraa Kajee shared a loved one’s breast cancer journey and walked to inspire hope.

Dr. Reddy’s team championed the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, emphasising that our well-being is truly in our hands.

Another participant, Kathy Dennis, who has triumphed over significant health challenges posed by Multiple Sclerosis, walked to inspire those with disabilities.

The event’s smooth execution, thanks to efficient park-and-ride services, ensured a seamless experience for everyone.

The 702 Walk the Talk embodied the concept of Ubuntu, and as we reflect on this year’s event, let us continue to build on uTata Madiba’s legacy of unity and resilience.
