National Arts Festival celebrates 50 years of national creativity

JOHANNESBURG - This year, South Africa’s longest-running and most diverse arts festival turns 50.

The festival, which takes place annually in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, is a global gathering place for artists and art enthusiasts.

It provides an opportunity for up-and-coming artists to showcase their work.

This year’s festival runs from the 20 to 30 June.

The Festival is still a mainstay of South Africa's cultural calendar, and this year's edition looks to be one of the most vibrant and inclusive to date.

Attendees are to anticipate performances by renowned South African and international artists in the visual, performing, and dance arts.

The lineup has a colourful mash-up of avant-garde and experimental performances that challenge the conventions of traditional art genres.

About 200 concerts from South Africa and throughout the globe will be featured at the event.

It will mark the third physical contact festival after being held virtually for two years due to Covid-19.
