Discussion | Reading and writing skills a challenge in young children

CAPE TOWN - The 2021 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study revealed that 81% of South African Grade 4 learners cannot read for meaning. 

While significant efforts have been made to enhance reading instruction in Grades 1 to 3, it's crucial to recognise that reading and writing skills are nurtured from a very young age.

These skills begin to develop in homes, ECD Centres, and Grade R classes, where children enhance their oral language, sound awareness, and letter knowledge. 

Speech Therapist from the South African Language Hearing Association Elizabeth Nadler-Nir spoke to eNCA.
