JOHANNESBURG - The National Council of SPCAs has raised the alarm over a potential avian flu crisis.

The organisation warns that an outbreak would devastate the poultry industry and threaten wild bird populations.

It has urged Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen to promote vaccination and enforce biosecurity measures.

However, impractical policies and high monitoring costs hinder progress.

Nazareth Appalsamy from the National Council of SPCAs Farm Animal Protection Unit says animals will suffer due to animal cruelty because it may be inhumane methods used for culling and stamping out the disease also they will be job losses.
