COP29 begins amid warnings of hottest year on record

JOHANNESBURG - As COP29 begins in Baku, the United Nations has warned that 2024 is on track to be the hottest year on record.

Delegates from nearly 200 countries are gathered to discuss how we can tackle this growing crisis but there are serious challenges ahead.

In particular, climate action goals—set out in the Paris Agreement—are looking increasingly difficult to achieve.

The situation is even more dire for South Africa, with rising temperatures and extreme weather events like floods posing a serious threat to both infrastructure and communities.

South Africa has called for more climate finance to help manage the growing impacts of climate change.

To help us understand these challenges, eNCA spoke to independent climate change researcher, Dr. Nomhle Ngwenya.
