JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa seems to be stamping his authority over the Bela Act after Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube announced she had signed an agreement with Solidarity on the contentious legislation.

Ramaphosa says that agreement has no bearing, in law or practical effect, on the inclusive multiparty discussions that are underway.
Professor Mary Metcalfe said on eNCA's The Round Table that the Constitution protects the right of every child to be taught in the language of their choice.
At the same time, the South African Democratic Teachers Union strongly criticised the government's agreement with the Solidarity Movement on the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act.
The union says the Minister is in violation of the Act.
Meanwhile, Good Party Secretary-General Brett Herron is calling for less hysteria and disinformation around the Bela Act.
