WATCH | Unpacking the dangers of giving children smartphones

JOHANNESBURG - More than half of children aged between  9 and 17 have seen sexual images on a phone or online in the past year.

That's the sobering news from the South African Law Reform Commission.

It says children see such images on their own devices and even on their parents' phones.

Up to 8% of the children have taken naked photos or videos of themselves, and two-thirds of those children shared them.

eNCA spoke to child protection activist Joan van Niekerk on the dangers of smartphones and how children can be protected.
