JOHANNESBURG - More often than not, people around the world are astonished and equally impressed that South Africa has 11 official languages.

Now, the country has added another, sign language takes the total to 12 official languages.

But how many do South Africans actually speak, and how many of these languages do they use to navigate a typical day?

Many of us speak English as a second, third or fourth language, but how open are South Africans to learning each other's languages?
