Christmas Babies | Parents welcome bundles of joy

JOHANNESBURG - Hospitals around the country are welcoming bundles of joy born on Christmas Day.

The Bertha Gxowa Hospital in Germiston has so far welcomed 11 babies on Christmas Day.

The number is expected to rise.

Last year, Gauteng welcomed 403 babies on Christmas Day.

Gauteng Health and Wellness MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko visited the facility on Sunday morning.

''I think today we're sitting at 11, and we have two sets of twins. There are more males than females," she said.

In Limpopo, at least 50 babies have been born since midnight.

The new mothers welcomed 25 baby boys and 25 baby girls.

Last year, the province recorded 253 babies on Christmas Day.

Limpopo Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba says society and communities should do more to protect and support young women.

She said police will be looking into the men involved with teenage girls who’ve given birth in the province.
