WATCH | Trump's tariff threats explained

JOHANNESBURG - US President Donald Trump has raised the stakes in the tariff war.

He's launched new fronts in his tariff war by announcing reciprocal levies on countries, calling it "the only fair way" to trade.

You might be asking, what exactly are reciprocal tariffs?

Well, reciprocal tariffs are basically an eye for an eye, a tariff for tariff type of situation.

The idea is simple: Increase US tariffs on imports to mirror the tariffs other countries impose on American goods.

Countries like India or Thailand which tax imports at higher rates than the United States does, could be affected.

Some have been bold enough to retaliate against the US.

Countries like China and Canada were quick to respond to Trump's proposed tariffs, slapping a hefty 25 percent levy on US shipments

The global tariff battle is heating up, and it's clear -- trade wars are far from over.

With that in mind, the big question is with much of the trade in the world done in China- how much of an impact will the US threats have on businesses that export to the US?

Are there opportunities to unlock other markets in other parts of the world?

We discuss this with Thina Nodada, managing director of Waymaker Trade Solutions.
