JOHANNESBURG - Cabinet has given the green light on banning scrap metal exports.
It has approved a comprehensive package of measures restricting trade in waste scrap and semi-processed metals.
The move is aimed at curbing metal infrastructure theft across the country which is costing the economy just under R190-billion a year.
Cabinet’s decision comes despite objections by a number of stakeholders, including the European Union.
The department proposed that exports of ferrous and nonferrous waste and scrap metal be banned for an initial period of six months from the date of publication of the final notice.
