UNTU wants protection for members

JOHANNESBURG - The majority union at Transnet has asked the state logistics company to protect its members as they return to work following a 12-day strike.

The United National Transport Union sealed a three-year wage deal with Transnet, accepting a six-percent increase for years one and three, and a 5.5-percent increase in the second year.

The other union, SATAWU, says UNTU betrayed workers by accepting the CCMA proposed offer.

UNTU says it will focus on clearing backlogs across the port and rail systems,  which cost the economy billions of rands in losses since the strike began.
