JOHANNESBURG - The country’s struggling sugar sector has renewed its campaign for the sugar tax to be scrapped.
The South African Canegrowers Association has written to Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana ahead of the February Budget, calling for the sugar tax to be scrapped altogether.
Previously the Miniter proposed increasing the health promotion levy from R2.21 to R2.31 per 100g of sugar.
The industry insists there is no evidence the health levy has had a positive impact on obesity levels in the country.
It says 1 million livelihoods are at stake, as the industry continues to take knocks from all sides.
