Significant increase in poultry product prices

JOHANNESBURG - In the 12 months from January 2023 until January this year, South African consumers have had to shell out 50 percent more for 60 eggs.

That's according to the Household Affordability Index from the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity group.

Ten kilograms of frozen chicken pieces cost you almost R22 more while livers also saw a steep incline in pricing of 16 percent.

The average price of two kilograms of chicken feet and gizzards rose between 4 and 5 percent respectively.

Meanwhile, the Competition Commission announced that it will be looking into poultry prices following complaints of uncompetitive behaviour.

The country's biggest poultry producer, Astral Foods, says the investigation is a blatant attack on the sector.

The industry says it has dealt with power cuts, a lack of service delivery and the bird flu outbreak, all of which have contributed to the higher cost of producing chicken.
