JOHANNESBURG - South Africa’s largest supermarket chain, Shoprite, has announced a 12% increase in annual sales.
In a statement released on Tuesda, the group revealed that merchandise sales for the year ending in June surged to approximately R240.7 billion, factoring in hyperinflation effects in Ghana.
The like-for-like sales growth for the period was 6.3%, with the stores acquired from Walmart-owned Massmart contributing to this growth only in the second half of the year.
The group's flagship division, Supermarkets SA, saw a 12.3% sales boost, contributing 81% of the total revenue.
During this period, Shoprite expanded its footprint by a net 292 stores, including 73 OK Franchise locations, bringing its total to 3,639 stores.
