JOHANNESBURG - So, you're tired of rolling blackouts and have decided it's time to go off the grid.
But what are the insurance implications?
Well, Omnisure spokesperson Lizo Mnguni says it's important to make sure the insured sum reflects the cost of the equipment you're installing.

And, that it's covered under the correct section of your policies.
"Most insurers do provide cover for your solar panels, your inverters, your UPS batteries and generators. But sometimes what we found is that people don't realise if they have cover or not.
"If you do have solar panels you need building insurance because it's on your building, it's on top of your roof," Mnguni said.
"Whereas if you have something like an inverter trolley then you need content insurance which covers everything inside your house. Some people may think they are covered but find they don't have the right insurance cover or an alternative power system they can install."
